DITS experiments with the automation of freight terminals of the future through the interaction of a digital twin with artificial intelligence
During the last General Assembly of the European project AUTOMOTIF that took place in Cremona on 6 and 7 May, within the UC 4, DITS presented the work that it is carrying out together with the other partners DSP, SUPSI and NTB on the digital twin of an intermodal freight terminal.
This is an advanced simulation that reproduces the real activities of the terminal, allowing to experiment with innovative ideas in a safe and flexible environment.
But we do not stop there: together with SUPSI, we are integrating artificial intelligence and simulations to find the best optimization solutions — such as new layouts, more efficient operating strategies, or the introduction of autonomous freight trains.
The process is expected to operate in a continuous cycle:

  • the digital model is updated with real data and objectives,
  • the AI proposes improvements,
  • the simulations test their effectiveness,
  • and the results are used to refine the proposals.
A process that aims to make more informed, faster and more sustainable decisions.
